The United States Chaplains Corps (USCC) was saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend and mentor, NYPD Chief Charles “Chucky” Scholl.
Scholl, who acted as the USCC’s General Director, Law Enforcement, died suddenly on Friday, June 17. He had been scheduled to speak at the USCC graduation ceremony on June 15 but was unable to attend due to illness.
“Chief Scholl’s passing is a great loss for USCC and all of Brooklyn,” said Mendy Coën, USCC’s Director-General. “He was a guiding force, friend, and mentor to all our chaplains involved in supporting the USCC Law Enforcement mission in support of the NYPD. He will be missed,” Coën added.
In May, Scholl addressed a group of USCC chaplains working with law enforcement during a training session via Zoom. Scholl offered tips on how best to work with law enforcement agencies, as well as tips on what to avoid.
Scholl had a long, prestigious career spanning over four decades. Scholl began his career at the 84th Precinct in Brooklyn Heights where he rose to the rank of sergeant. He went on to become captain of the 61st Precinct in Sheepshead Bay before moving to the 71st Precinct in Crown Heights. Scholl later became the deputy inspector and commander of the 60th Precinct in Coney Island before moving on to become the police chief of Brooklyn South.
Assistant Chief Michael Kemper (@NYPDBklynSouth), the current commanding officer of Brooklyn South, tweeted:
“It’s with profound sadness to announce the sudden passing of Chief Charles “Chucky” Scholl. Appointed to the NYPD in November, 1979, Chief Scholl served the NYPD exceptionally during his 41 yr career. All who knew him respected & loved him. Chief Scholl will be missed immensely!”
The USCC is planning a memorial service to take place in mid-August in partnership with the NYPD.
